The least sexy things are often the most useful

I’m sharing a thought here that I find quite true over the decades, across spectrums of health, exercising, dancing, fashion, career, personal finance, meditation, whatever it is…

I’ll share a few examples here to kickstart this conversation for a bit of fun!

Example: Boxing

The sexiest thing: Punching and kicking!

The least sexy thing: Hip circles warm-up exercises

Why it’s not sexy: People always find it unattractive and uncool, often unsure where to put their hands when doing hip circles, looking away from the mirror to avoid eye contact, or minimising the movements to avoid standing out from the crowd.

It’s useful because: “Hip circles are a great dynamic stretch that can activate your hip muscles and prepare for the twisting motion that comes with boxing strikes”, according to this article by Join Fight Camp.

Example: heels

The sexiest thing: 6” heels

The least sexy thing: Flats or flip-flops

Why it’s not sexy: Flats or flip-flips don’t elongate our legs (Tell me about it, I’m only 5’2”.)

It’s useful because: If we have to run around town in heels from 9 am to 5 pm, we won’t be able to feel our feet. Those flats and flip-flips extend our lives for years! (Any event organizers out there?)

Example: INVESTMENTS

The sexiest thing: Stocks, Accumulator, Bitcoin, Whatever is of high risk

The least sexy thing: Compound interest savings

Why it’s not sexy: It doesn’t give exciting stories or make us sound rich when sharing with friends

It’s useful because: It’s the goalkeeper protecting the bottom line of our investment portfolio and balancing out the risks from the “sexy” investments. “Compound interest makes your money grow faster because interest is calculated on the accumulated interest over time as well as on your original principal. Compounding can create a snowball effect, as the original investments plus the income earned from those investments grow together”, according to an article by Schwab Moneywise. It’s also proven by Warren Buffett:

My wealth has come from a combination of living in America, some lucky genes, and compound interest.”  ~ Warren Buffett

Example: ENTREPRENEURSHIP

The sexiest thing: Being named 40 under 40 by some international magazines

The least sexy thing: Negotiating for cheaper prices with vendors

Why it’s not sexy: It doesn’t look like what a successful and rich entrepreneur would do. They all look very composed and elegant, with a big team working for them.

It’s useful because: Every penny saved would get the business going!

It’s always good to remind ourselves what doesn’t feel “sexy” might be helpful for some overlooked aspects. What else can you think of? List your examples in the comment box below - be creative and have fun!
