what will matter most to you in 20 years?

Forget new year's resolutions that get forgotten by every February. Think long-term. Are you working towards your life goals?

I remember I asked myself “what would matter to me most in 20 years” during a personal year-end review right before Christmas six or seven years ago. It was a very heavy question and back then I couldn’t give a satisfactory answer. It was impossible to imagine myself in my retirement age.

So instead of thinking about the future, I reviewed the past few years - what I’ve done right and wrong. The process is simple - listing out all the things that are giving me the most positive or negative energy (worksheets below). That was easy. I went through my iCal and made sure I didn’t miss anything. The idea is to do more of the things that you find positive and proud of and cut off all those that drag you down.

This regular review (I do it every month now) is a work-in-progress - it is like sharpening a needle from a thick chunk of steel, bit by bit until you reach an alignment with your heart - this is when your heart feels full and light.

Once you get to that point, you will know the answer to the thing(s) that matter(s) most to you. Why does this matter anyway? Knowing what we do helps us work toward a better life and to avoid wasting our time, energy and money on stuff that is not contributing to the most important thing we are all going after - happiness.

Have fun doing this review, and I encourage you to schedule a time with yourself in 6 months to do it again - I promise you will find it useful in giving you the authority to say no to things that don’t matter!

Sheet 1: Positive VS Negative Energy

Do more of the things that give you positive energy. Cut away those that are dragging you down.

Sheet 2: Proud Moments & Excitements

Keep doing more of the things that make you feel proud. Omit those that you’re not proud of.

Savour your favourite time of the day and protect it to be your “me time”.

Continue to share and giveaway things/your services that you feel excited about.
