Can You quit your job today?

Can you leave your job today without much worry?

The Reality of the Corporate World

I have received news from a few connections that they or their spouses were made redundant in the past few months. This spanned across mid to senior management in MNCs. In the corporate world, it sounds a bit unfair that you need approvals for your annual leaves or getting a promotion, but you don’t get a say when they “streamline” their operation and make you lose your job.

For some, it could be a blessing in disguise to have an opportunity to reset, recharge, and find another opportunity, if they have sufficient savings on hand to support themselves (and their family) for half a year or even a few years without working. For others who clear out their savings every month down to net zero, this could lead to a panic attack in the household.

Most people don’t have a monetary buffer for a sudden job loss, leading to panic if it happens.

What you can do now to eliminate worries of being suddenly laid off

If you can leave your job today without worries at all, it means 2 things:

  1. You have confidence that you can find a better job

  2. You have sufficient savings to support yourself (and your family) before getting a new job

If you can’t do that, it’s time to:

  1. Review your strategies for savings and wealth portfolio

A good balance is to start with expense management, and then move on to incoming wealth management, as discussed in my previous post about the “4 Buckets of Gold in Life” here.

  2. Have a playbook for your potential career path

I have a habit of jotting down the “reviews” of myself from others all through my school days and work life into a file. This has helped me put together a mindmap of who Grace is, and what hard and soft skills I have gained in my lifetime. I find it very useful in helping me keep a creative mind about my career, without the traditional boundaries of staying within the sales and marketing field all through my life. You can start by asking your family and friends 3 words to describe you or copy some keywords from your annual performance review with your boss and peers. This is a file that I always go to, and that’s how I know I am in the right place now doing what I love while being my true self.

Plan Now and Don’t Wait

It’s always good to be prepared beforehand rather than panic and get frazzled when things don’t work out. Once the monetary buffer (refer to “4 Buckets of Gold in Life” ) and mental preparation (career path playbook) are done, you will be invincible. I guess Superman doesn’t sew his costume or learn how to fly at the very moment when he’s needed to save the world!
